Match Background

Forest vs Malmö and memories of 1979. The both teams have a historical link, also competing in Forest's previous European adventure in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the premier competition final 46 years ago that entwines these two together, with the record-breaking signing Francis scoring the winner of a rather dull championship game to clinch eternal glory for the the English club.

"Brian Clough and Peter Taylor, unassuming and low-key amid all the colour and celebration, stood for a moment on a bench calmly observing the revelry," wrote the match reporter. Theirs has been an outstanding achievement that it is hard to see being repeated – from the lower league to European football in a short period."

Worth mentioning to pause a little on Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Swedish club to make the championship match under English manager Bob Houghton.

The current fixture is a distant from that pinnacle, closer perhaps to the previous continental meeting between Forest and Malmö in the mid-nineties. Forest are riding high after thrashing Liverpool at Liverpool's home on Saturday, while Malmö have been inactive since early November following the conclusion of their domestic campaign. The smart money is on the English side tonight.

Plenty of other action on offer in this match tracking. Rangers have already been defeated by a European rival this season. Rangers are rock bottom of the competition table at the middle of the league phase with no points whatsoever. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any opportunity for a late surge for a qualification place.

Updates will continue with all the evening matches and provide the current standings from the previous games, including the Birmingham match and the Dutch-Scottish clash.
