Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were numerous British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
