Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
